Investing in Ethical Procurement to Carve Out a Whole New Segment from the Seafood Market

Fishwife, a female-founded and led tinned Seafood Company which aims to make thoughtfully sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood a staple in every cupboard, has officially announced a nationwide expansion into select Whole Foods Market stores. According to certain reports, the development will see Fishwife bringing a host of different products to these stores, beginning with its Cantabrian Anchovies in Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This extra virgin olive oil makes for an exciting product to have at Whole Foods’ stores, considering it is made using rich buttery Fishwife’s Anchovies that are, by the way, caught in the Cantabrian Sea by the artisanal purse seine fishing method in Europe’s only MSC-certified sustainable anchovy fishery. In case this in itself isn’t impressive enough, then we must mention how the product is also packed with premium Spanish extra virgin olive oil. Next up, Fishwife will get Whole Foods’ locations to stock its Sardines with Preserved Lemon and Sardines with Hot Pepper. A detail we need to mention about these sardines is rooted in the fact that they are responsibly wild-caught off the coast of Cornwall, England. Keeping the trend alive, this location also happens to be the only MSC-certified sustainable sardine fishery in Europe. To further bolster their exclusivity, these sardines are markedly hand-picked using traditional methods.

“Since we started conversations in 2021, Whole Foods Market has been an unbelievably committed supplier to Fishwife,” said Becca Millstein, CEO and Co-Founder of Fishwife. “We’re grateful to have an innovation and retail relationship that we can grow with for years to come to further expand our grocery footprint nationwide.”

Moving on, Fishwife’s nationwide expansion into Whole Foods will also see its Smoked Salmon with Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp making an appearance on the retail chain’s shelves. This salmon is sourced directly from Kvarøy Arctic, the first finfish farm to carry the Fair Trade USA seal, BAP, ASC, and Global G.A.P. certification. Once procured, the stated product is brined in salt, garlic salt, and brown sugar before getting hand-packed into cans with Fly By Jing’s Sichuan Chili Crisp, the first and only 100% all-natural Sichuan chili sauce, crafted in Chengdu.

Alongside the products in question, Whole Foods will also exclusively carry Fishwife’s newly launched Albacore Tuna in Olive Oil and Albacore Tuna in Spicy Olive Oil.

“We’re thrilled to expand Fishwife to more Whole Foods Market shelves,” said Julia Seidner, Category Merchant at Whole Foods Market. “We’re so excited for customers to try the exclusive line of Albacore Tuna in Olive Oil and Albacore Tuna in Spicy Olive Oil. I love these products because they are deliciously tender and rich in flavor!”

Founded in 2020, Fishwife is a company working with an aim to provide ethically sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood to all the seafood enthusiasts in America. At present, it fetches its ingredients from Marine Stewardship Council-certified fisheries, fishery improvement projects, as well as from Aquaculture Stewardship Council-certified aquaculture farms. The whole efficacy and excellence of Fishwife’s operation can also be understood once you consider it has already been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Refinery29, New York Magazine, Epicurious, Conde Nast Traveler, and several other publications.

“While the growth in 1the conventional tinned fish category grew only 1% from 2022 to 2023, we saw our business grow nearly 180% YoY, with no signs of a slowdown,” said Millstein. “There has been so much discovery of tinned fish over the past three years that we’re now seeing that the product has assimilated into the regular diets of our consumers.”
