How a new international seed alliance is boosting innovation, resilience, and food security
Harare, Zimbabwe, 9 February 2026 – Valley Seeds, one of Zimbabwe’s leading seed producers, has taken a major step toward strengthening national food security by securing a new five-year international partnership with a United States-based seed technology leader.
The agreement marks a turning point for Valley Seeds, reinforcing its role as a trusted supplier to farmers and a key contributor to Zimbabwe’s agricultural value chain. While the name of the US partner has not been disclosed, the collaboration brings advanced global technology into local seed production.
More than a renewal
This new deal goes beyond a simple contract renewal. It expands Valley Seeds’ access to cutting-edge seed genetics and research, giving the company the flexibility to introduce improved maize and wheat varieties suited to local farming conditions.
Farmers will continue to receive well-known maize hybrids already grown in Zimbabwe, while also benefiting from a new pipeline of high-performance seed varieties developed around the world. This approach allows Valley Seeds to select and license the best genetics for different regions, climates, and productivity needs.
Local farming, global science
According to managing director Aluis Chareka, the partnership allows Valley Seeds to support a wider range of farmers across the country.
By combining international research with local expertise, the company ensures that Zimbabwean farmers can access the same quality of innovation found in leading global agricultural markets.
This strategy is especially important as farmers face increasing pressure from climate change, variable rainfall, and the need to improve yields on limited land.
Investing in quality and resilience
To support its growth, Valley Seeds has invested heavily in local infrastructure. A modern seed preservation facility in Juru has been developed to improve seed storage, protection, and scientific accuracy.
Another advanced facility in Ruwa is focused on producing climate-resilient small grains, which are becoming increasingly important for sustainable food systems.
The company is also expanding beyond seed production. New investments include a stock feed manufacturing plant and increased vegetable seed production to support the growing horticulture sector.
Supporting crop diversity
Crop diversification remains central to Valley Seeds’ strategy. New wheat varieties introduced by the company are already supporting Zimbabwe’s bread production needs. The business is also expanding into traditional grains such as sorghum, millet, and African pea.
In addition, Valley Seeds continues its involvement in cotton production through its ownership of Southern Cotton Private Limited, supporting rural industries and value addition.
Ready to meet demand
Commercial director Tich Mapongah says production at the company’s manufacturing plants is progressing well and the business is prepared to meet local demand.
By using more than 30 years of climate and landscape data, Valley Seeds is tailoring international science to Zimbabwe’s unique environment. This ensures that every seed performs reliably in local conditions.
As Zimbabwe continues to focus on sustainable agriculture and food security, Valley Seeds’ global partnership highlights how local expertise and international innovation can work together to feed the nation.
